Leveraging AI in your SME: what can you learn from success stories?

Since the arrival of ChatGPT, Copilot, and other accessible tools, artificial intelligence (AI) has made a remarkable entry into SMEs. Many have embraced it… sometimes tentatively.

Saving a few hours thanks to a chatbot or automating a report is great. But is it enough to create value? Not really.

At Nexus Innovations, we support SMEs in concrete AI projects that meet real needs. And what we observe is simple: success stories never come about by chance. They follow a clear method, avoid certain pitfalls, and focus on the right levers.

This is not always the case. Too often, projects fail due to a lack of clear objectives, unreliable data, an unverified legal framework, or a lack of team buy-in. These errors, which are common but avoidable, hinder the potential of AI.

During our conference at Stratégies PME, we will share our findings from the field. What successful AI projects have in common, mistakes to avoid, but above all, a 5-step method for transforming AI into a concrete performance lever for your business.

What successful AI projects have in common

SMEs that truly leverage AI have three things in common:

1. A clear business need

It’s not AI for AI’s sake. It’s a response to a real challenge: automating a critical task, improving quality, refining forecasts… The project always starts from the ground up, not from a trend.

2. Existing tools (carefully selected)

Most SMEs do not need to develop a customized AI model. The technologies available today are often sufficient… Provided they are properly integrated, both technically and humanly.

3. A rigorous method

No massive overnight deployment. Effective AI projects move forward in stages, with short phases, frequent validations, and constant adjustments.

The 5-step method we use at Nexus

Here is the approach we follow at Nexus Innovations for our AI projects with our SME clients. It is simple, but extremely effective.

1. Identify a specific irritant or opportunity

Every AI project starts with a good irritant. We look for a specific, frequent, and costly issue: a time-consuming manual task, difficulty estimating demand, recurring customer frustration. The more concrete it is, the better. It is this clarity that will guide future technological choices and efforts.

2. Define the right success indicators and choose the right tools (by verifying the
data).

An AI project without measurable objectives is like driving blind. So, right from the start, we define the right indicators: reduction in processing time? Improvement in satisfaction rates? Reduction in errors? At the same time, we assess the availability and quality of the data. These factors will determine whether or not the project is successful.

3. Rapid prototyping

There’s no need to wait months to get an initial value. Using existing tools (often already available within the company), a functional prototype can be quickly put together. It is also at this stage that the initial limitations of the data are identified and adjustments made accordingly. The objective is simple: to produce a testable version as soon as possible.

4. Iterate quickly to get into production

Once the prototype is ready, it is put into the hands of users. Their feedback allows for corrections, adjustments, and even pivots. This phase is short, dynamic, and geared toward rapid deployment. It is better to have an imperfect tool that is used than a technological gem that sits unused in a drawer.

5. Develop the solution within the ecosystem

This step is often overlooked… yet it is essential. An AI solution is only valuable if it is integrated into the daily work of teams. This requires training, clear communication, and sometimes adaptation of internal processes. The tool must be part of the company’s ecosystem, not separate from it.

Want to go further?

What we have learned from our experience in the field is that there is a real way to make AI a strategic asset for SMEs. It is a structured, iterative approach that is, above all, focused on people and business results. And what we are offering you at our conference at Stratégies PME is precisely this realistic and practical vision. You will leave with concrete tools, a proven method, and clear ideas about what you can do in your SME right now. We look forward to chatting with you in person.
